At Waller + Wood, we pride ourselves on turning bold concepts into handcrafted realities. In this bespoke project, we were commissioned to create a resin kitchen island top that would serve not only as a functional workspace but as a centrepiece for our client’s newly renovated home. This was not just about fabrication – it was about storytelling through material, form, and detail.

Oak and Emerald Resin Kitchen Island

From the outset, we partnered closely with AMB360, whose 360-degree digital design service helped bring the client’s vision to life before a single tool was picked up. Through a series of detailed 3D renderings, the client was able to explore how different shapes, finishes, and colour options would appear in their space. The design phase allowed for real-time adjustments and full visibility, ensuring absolute confidence in the final concept.

The design called for a live-edge English oak slab, chosen for its striking grain, natural contours, and tactile quality. We sourced a slab with beautiful asymmetry – full of character and movement. The wood alone was stunning, but the true focal point of the piece was a “resin river” that would run through its centre. The resin, tinted in a subtle smoky green, was carefully selected to complement both the wood’s warm tone and the cooler palette of the surrounding kitchen.

To begin fabrication, we first flattened and shaped the oak slab, preserving the organic live edge to enhance its natural feel. A custom mould was built to contain the slab and guide the resin pour. The resin itself was poured in multiple stages over several days, using a deep-pour epoxy suitable for large volumes and high optical clarity. Between each layer, time was given for curing, and every surface was sanded by hand to ensure proper bonding and a flawless finish.

The final resin layer was polished through progressive sanding up to 3000 grit, then buffed by hand to a mirror gloss. This created a glass-like surface that reflected both natural and artificial light – making the resin appear almost fluid. It was a balance of technical precision and artistic touch, highlighting Waller + Wood’s commitment to craftsmanship.

When it came time for installation, the precision of AMB360’s digital modelling paid dividends. The island top was transported and installed on-site with no surprises – its dimensions and cutouts fitting perfectly into the existing cabinetry. No additional modifications were required. The resin’s clarity and depth captured the room’s light and energy, making it a true visual anchor in the space.

Beyond its beauty, the island top was also designed for everyday practicality. The resin is food-safe, heat-resistant, and easy to clean, making it ideal for kitchen use. Its durable surface will retain its clarity and gloss for years to come, with minimal maintenance.

The final result was a piece that blurred the line between furniture and art. It drew compliments from everyone who entered the space and served as a daily reminder of how custom craftsmanship can elevate even the most utilitarian element of a home.

Our client was delighted, sharing that the finished top was “more beautiful than they ever imagined” and “the most commented-on feature of their home.” For Waller + Wood, it was another rewarding project that demonstrated the value of thoughtful collaboration, high-quality materials, and skilled hands.

This project exemplifies what we strive for in every commission – design-led, handcrafted work that not only meets a brief but transcends it. From render to delivery, every stage was handled with care, precision, and pride.
